Two Bespoke Millboard Decking Installations in London

This unique Millboard decking project in London demonstrates not only the versatility of premium decking but also the long-term relationships we build with our clients. Having previously completed a successful installation at the property, the homeowner invited Decking Gurus back to design and construct two additional bespoke outdoor areas, each serving a completely different purpose.

The first installation created a spacious and practical children's play terrace, while the second transformed the entrance to a private garden bar into an elegant raised entertaining area. Although different in function, both were individually designed around the property and constructed with the same focus on precision engineering, premium materials and meticulous craftsmanship.

For us, being invited back to complete additional work is particularly important. It demonstrates the confidence our clients place in the quality of the original installation and gives us the opportunity to continue developing their outdoor space as their requirements evolve.

Designing Two Decking Areas for Different Purposes

Rather than treating the project as two identical decking installations, each area was designed around how it would actually be used.

The lower terrace needed to provide a comfortable, practical surface suitable for children's everyday play while remaining attractive enough to form part of the wider landscaped garden. A generous level platform creates a dedicated family area without introducing unnecessary level changes or complicated detailing.

The second terrace had an entirely different purpose. Positioned directly outside the private garden bar, it needed to create a strong architectural entrance and provide additional space for socialising and entertaining.

Different Millboard finishes were therefore selected for each area, allowing every terrace to develop its own character while maintaining the premium quality and detailing used throughout the property.

Millboard Weathered Oak Children's Play Area

The children's play terrace was finished using Millboard Weathered Oak 200mm in Vintage / Driftwood, creating a natural, relaxed appearance that sits comfortably within the surrounding garden.

The wider Weathered Oak boards give the terrace a substantial architectural character while the weathered timber tones complement the surrounding landscaping. The result is considerably more refined than a conventional children's play surface, allowing the area to remain visually integrated with the rest of the garden.

The generous level surface provides plenty of room for toys and everyday family activities while maintaining clear circulation around the space.

Rather than creating an area that would only be useful while the children are young, the terrace was designed as a permanent part of the garden. As the family's requirements change, it can easily evolve into an additional seating, dining or relaxation area.

A Practical Surface for Family Living

For a children's play area, material selection and detailing are particularly important.

Millboard provides a comfortable surface without the splintering associated with ageing timber decking, while its textured finish offers good underfoot grip. The low-maintenance construction is also particularly practical in a busy family garden where the terrace will experience regular everyday use.

Concealed fixings remove conventional exposed screw heads from the main decking surface, while consistent board spacing and carefully finished edges create a clean and refined installation.

This project demonstrates that practical family spaces do not need to compromise on architectural appearance. With the right design, a children's play terrace can become an attractive and permanent feature of a premium landscaped garden.

Precision-Engineered Galvanised Steel Substructure

Both decking areas are supported by bespoke precision-engineered galvanised steel substructures, individually fabricated around the dimensions and structural requirements of each installation.

The rigid steel frameworks provide accurate support beneath the Millboard boards while offering excellent resistance to moisture and structural movement. Unlike conventional timber framing, steel does not suffer from timber rot, twisting or the same dimensional changes associated with repeated wet and dry conditions.

Precision fabrication was particularly important around perimeter borders, level changes and the raised garden bar terrace, where the visible Millboard detailing relies on an accurately constructed foundation beneath it.

The finished decking may be the part of the project that is immediately visible, but the quality and accuracy of the supporting framework are fundamental to how the installation performs over the long term.

Raised Coppered Oak Garden Bar Terrace

The second installation forms an elegant raised entrance terrace to the client's private garden bar.

For this area, Millboard Enhanced Grain in Coppered Oak was selected to create a warmer and richer appearance. Its natural golden-brown tones complement the timber-clad garden bar beautifully, helping the terrace and building feel like parts of the same architectural composition.

The raised platform creates a defined transition between the garden and bar while providing additional usable space immediately outside the entrance.

Rather than simply functioning as access to the building, the new terrace becomes part of the entertainment area itself, offering space for guests to gather outside while maintaining a seamless connection with the bar interior.

Future-Ready Glass Balustrade Design

The raised garden bar terrace has also been prepared for the client's future balustrade plans.

Composite balustrade posts have been incorporated into the installation ready for the addition of glass panels at a later stage. Planning these elements during the original construction allows their positions to be coordinated with the decking and supporting structure rather than attempting to retrofit them after the terrace is complete.

Once the glass is installed, it will provide the required perimeter definition while maintaining an open appearance and allowing views across the garden.

Designing for future additions is an important part of bespoke outdoor construction. It allows clients to develop their gardens in stages without compromising the quality or appearance of the original installation.

Integrated Garden Bar Lighting

Lighting plays an important role in the character of the garden bar area after sunset.

Integrated canopy lighting illuminates the entrance and Coppered Oak terrace, highlighting the warm tones of the decking while creating an inviting atmosphere for evening entertaining.

Rather than overwhelming the space with excessive lighting, the illumination has been incorporated into the architecture of the garden bar. This keeps the decking itself visually clean while providing practical lighting around the entrance and raised terrace.

The combination of warm Coppered Oak, timber cladding and architectural lighting gives the garden bar a sophisticated evening character and allows the outdoor entertaining area to remain usable well beyond daylight hours.

Precision Millboard Detailing Throughout

Although the two terraces serve very different purposes, the same attention to detail is visible throughout both installations.

Millboard's concealed fixing systems maintain clean board surfaces, while precision picture-frame borders, accurately aligned boards, carefully executed mitres and neatly finished perimeter details give each terrace a refined architectural appearance.

The board layouts were individually planned around the dimensions and proportions of each space rather than simply beginning at one side and working across the area.

This attention to setting out is particularly important with premium Millboard installations, where board direction, border proportions and junction details can significantly influence the overall appearance of the completed terrace.

Two Millboard Finishes, One Cohesive Garden

Using different Millboard finishes allowed each terrace to develop its own identity.

The Weathered Oak Vintage / Driftwood play area introduces softer, naturally weathered tones suited to the relaxed family section of the garden. In contrast, Coppered Oak creates a richer and warmer appearance around the private garden bar, complementing the timber building and evening lighting.

Despite the difference in colour and character, the consistent quality of construction, structural engineering and architectural detailing connects the two spaces visually.

This is one of the advantages of designing outdoor areas specifically around a property rather than attempting to use exactly the same material and layout everywhere.

Low-Maintenance Outdoor Spaces Built for Everyday Use

Both installations were designed as practical outdoor spaces that can withstand regular family use without demanding the maintenance associated with conventional timber decking.

Millboard recreates the character and texture of timber while avoiding the need for routine sanding, staining or oiling. It also removes the problems of timber splintering and decay that can become particularly undesirable around children's play areas and frequently used entertaining spaces.

Combined with the galvanised steel frameworks beneath, the two installations provide a robust and low-maintenance solution from the supporting structure through to the finished walking surface.

The result is not simply two attractive terraces, but outdoor areas designed around long-term everyday use.

A Returning Client & Continuing Garden Transformation

One of the most important aspects of this project is that it was completed for a returning Decking Gurus client.

After experiencing the quality of our previous work at the property, the homeowner trusted us to return and create two further areas as part of the continuing development of their garden.

For us, repeat projects provide an opportunity to build upon earlier work while maintaining consistent standards across different parts of the property. They also allow an outdoor environment to evolve naturally as a family's lifestyle and requirements change.

In this case, one new terrace supports everyday family life while the other is designed around entertaining—two very different requirements connected through the same approach to materials, engineering and craftsmanship.

The Weathered Oak 200mm Vintage / Driftwood children's terrace provides a practical and attractive family space, while the Coppered Oak raised garden bar terrace, integrated lighting and future-ready glass balustrade system create a sophisticated environment for entertaining.

Most importantly, the project represents the confidence of a returning client who chose Decking Gurus again to continue transforming their outdoor space with precision engineering, premium materials and exceptional craftsmanship.
