The subframe needs to provide accurate support while allowing appropriate drainage and ventilation around the timber. We don't use one construction method for every hardwood deck.

Welded Galvanised Steel Decking Frames

For raised, multi-level and more structurally demanding hardwood terraces, we offer bespoke welded galvanised steel subframes.

Steel sections can be measured, cut, positioned and welded on site around the exact shape and levels of the project. This creates a rigid and dimensionally stable foundation that is particularly useful for raised terraces, complex layouts, substantial staircases and larger bespoke hardwood decking installations.

Unlike timber, the steel framework itself is not vulnerable to timber rot, while galvanising provides additional protection against corrosion. Its dimensional stability also gives us an accurate foundation for maintaining board alignment, levels and detailed finishing above.

Where appropriate, steel can be combined with other suitable components to provide the required fixing arrangement for the hardwood boards.

Structural Timber Subframes

Correctly specified treated structural timber remains an effective solution for many conventional hardwood garden terraces.

Careful attention is given to drainage, ventilation and separation from persistent moisture, helping create suitable conditions for both the frame and hardwood decking above.

Balau is another popular decking hardwood, known for its rich brown and reddish-brown tones, density and natural character. It can work equally well alongside traditional architecture or contemporary landscaping.

Other hardwood species can also be considered where their characteristics suit the project.

We look beyond a small timber sample and consider how the finished decking will work alongside brickwork, render, glazing, paving, planting and outdoor furniture. The eventual weathering of the timber should also be considered when choosing the overall material palette.

Installation is equally important. Hardwood may require stainless-steel fixings, pre-drilling and other species- or system-specific fixing methods. Appropriate board spacing and detailing around walls, steps and other structures allow for drainage and natural movement.
