Rooftop Balcony with Millboard Smoked Oak – London
This bespoke rooftop balcony transformation in London demonstrates how precision engineering, premium materials and specialist construction techniques can transform an underutilised flat roof into a sophisticated outdoor living space. Designed and constructed by Decking Gurus, the project involved creating a floating decking system above an existing waterproof GRP roof, finished with premium Millboard Enhanced Grain decking in Smoked Oak.
Directly accessible from the master bedroom, the new terrace transforms what was previously a largely unused roof area into a practical private balcony overlooking the garden. The combination of Millboard decking, contemporary stainless steel and glass balustrades and carefully engineered floating construction creates an elegant outdoor environment while protecting the waterproof roof system beneath.

Transforming an Unused Flat Roof
Before the transformation, the balcony consisted primarily of an exposed GRP waterproof roof surface enclosed by an existing stainless steel and glass balustrade.
Although the elevated position offered excellent views across the garden, the bare roofing surface provided little of the comfort or architectural character expected from a premium residential balcony.
The objective was therefore to create a usable outdoor floor without compromising the waterproof roof beneath it. Finished levels, drainage routes, doorway thresholds, structural loading and the existing balustrades all had to be considered before the decking system could be designed.
Rather than treating the project as conventional garden decking, the entire installation was developed specifically around the requirements of an elevated waterproof roof.
Protecting the Existing GRP Waterproofing
One of the most important considerations on any rooftop decking project is protecting the waterproof membrane beneath the finished terrace.
Fixing a conventional decking structure directly through the GRP surface could introduce unnecessary penetrations into the waterproofing. Instead, the new terrace was designed as an independent floating decking system, allowing the supporting structure to sit above the existing roof.
Protective interfaces between the support system and GRP surface help distribute loads while reducing direct abrasion against the waterproof layer.
This approach allows the roof and decking to perform as separate systems: the GRP continues to provide the waterproof envelope, while the structure above creates the level finished walking surface.
Precision-Engineered Floating Pedestal System
Hidden beneath the Millboard surface is a specialist adjustable pedestal support system designed specifically for balconies, flat roofs and rooftop terraces.
Individual pedestal feet allow the supporting framework to accommodate the natural falls incorporated into the existing roof while creating a level decking surface above. Protective rubber pads provide separation between the supports and waterproofing below.
Because the framework does not depend upon conventional fixings through the main roof surface, the structure can remain independently supported above the waterproof membrane.
The system also preserves a clear void beneath the decking, allowing water to continue travelling across the GRP surface towards the existing drainage points.
Maintaining Rooftop Drainage
Correct drainage is fundamental to the long-term performance of any rooftop terrace.
The finished Millboard surface is not intended to replace the waterproof roof beneath it. Rainwater passes through the necessary gaps between the decking boards and continues across the GRP membrane below towards the roof's drainage system.
Careful positioning of the supporting structure ensures these drainage routes remain unobstructed while also allowing ventilation beneath the decking.
This hidden aspect of the installation is particularly important because a visually perfect rooftop terrace can only perform correctly when the roof beneath remains capable of managing water as originally designed.
Millboard Enhanced Grain Smoked Oak
The balcony has been specified in Millboard Enhanced Grain Smoked Oak, selected for its rich natural appearance and suitability for an exposed elevated environment.
The sophisticated grey-brown tones complement the property's traditional brickwork, anthracite glazing and contemporary stainless steel and glass balustrades, creating a balanced relationship between modern detailing and the existing architecture.
Millboard's authentic surface texture provides the character associated with natural oak while eliminating much of the routine maintenance required by conventional timber decking.
Unlike traditional softwood or hardwood decking, there is no requirement for regular sanding, staining or oiling to maintain the surface.
Concealed Fixings & Picture-Frame Detailing
Every visible element of the decking was planned around a clean, contemporary architectural finish.
The Millboard boards are installed using concealed fixings, helping maintain uninterrupted grain across the surface without rows of conventional exposed screw heads.
Carefully positioned picture-frame detailing defines the perimeter of the balcony, while consistent board spacing and accurate alignment reinforce the clean geometry of the installation.
Particular attention is required around the existing balustrades, building elevations, thresholds and drainage areas, where precise detailing has a significant influence on both the appearance and performance of a rooftop installation.
Seamless Bedroom-to-Balcony Connection
One of the greatest benefits of the transformation is the improved relationship between the master bedroom and the outdoor space.
By carefully establishing the finished decking height in relation to the existing doorway, the new surface creates a far more natural transition from the interior onto the balcony.
Opening the doors now reveals a genuine outdoor living area rather than an exposed roof surface, visually extending the bedroom towards the garden and making the balcony feel like an integral part of the property.
For urban homes where external space can be limited, transforming an existing roof in this way can significantly increase the practical enjoyment of the property.
Glass Balustrades & Elevated Garden Views
The existing stainless steel and glass balustrade system works particularly well with the new Smoked Oak decking.
Transparent glass maintains open views across the garden while providing the necessary perimeter protection around the elevated balcony. The stainless steel detailing introduces a contemporary contrast against the natural timber character of the Millboard surface.
Rather than visually enclosing the compact terrace, the glass allows the surrounding landscape to remain part of the space, helping the balcony feel considerably more open.
Combined with the darker Smoked Oak finish, the result is a refined contemporary rooftop environment with a strong connection to the garden below.
Designed for Low-Maintenance Outdoor Living
Elevated balconies can be more difficult to maintain than conventional ground-level terraces, making material selection particularly important.
Millboard is well suited to these applications because it provides the appearance and texture of timber without requiring the repetitive maintenance associated with traditional wood decking.
Its resistance to moisture, weathering and everyday outdoor exposure makes it particularly practical for an exposed balcony where access for future sanding, staining or extensive maintenance would be inconvenient.
Combined with the floating support system beneath, the completed installation provides a practical outdoor surface designed around long-term performance and straightforward maintenance.
Maximising a Compact Rooftop Space
Although relatively compact compared with a large garden terrace, careful design allows the balcony to provide valuable additional living space.
The straightforward board layout keeps the design visually uncluttered, while the transparent balustrades preserve views and help prevent the terrace from feeling enclosed.
The completed balcony provides an ideal private setting for morning coffee, seating, relaxation and enjoying the surrounding garden from an elevated position.
It demonstrates that a successful rooftop transformation does not necessarily require a large footprint. Careful engineering, premium materials and considered detailing can make even relatively small roof areas valuable extensions of the home.
