This bespoke Millboard decking installation in Billericay, Essex transformed a large, ageing timber deck into a contemporary multi-level outdoor living space designed for dining, entertaining and everyday family life. The original timber structure had deteriorated extensively beneath the surface, with rotten boards and structural timbers making complete replacement the appropriate long-term solution. Replacing a Severely Deteriorated Timber Deck

Once the existing decking was removed, the extent of deterioration within the old timber structure became clearly visible. Years of exposure to moisture had affected not only the surface boards but also significant sections of the supporting framework beneath them.

Rather than covering or repairing a structure that had reached the end of its practical service life, the old decking and compromised supporting timbers were removed to allow the replacement terrace to be properly constructed from the foundations upwards. Integrated LED Step Lighting

Low-profile LED lights were recessed into the staircase risers, providing practical illumination while emphasising the shape of the terrace after dark.

The lighting follows the extended staircase around the garden-facing edge of the decking, producing a subtle line of illumination that highlights the different levels and makes movement between the terrace and lawn safer in the evening.

Rather than appearing as an additional feature fitted afterwards, the lighting was planned as part of the decking construction so that the fittings, cabling and positioning could be incorporated neatly into the finished structure.

Contemporary Handrails & Balustrades

The elevated dining section required a secure edge without making the terrace feel enclosed. A contemporary dark-grey handrail and balustrade system was therefore incorporated around the raised area.

The slim vertical balusters provide the necessary physical separation between levels while maintaining open views across the garden. Their dark finish creates a strong architectural contrast against the pale Limed Oak decking and complements the outdoor furniture and other darker details around the property.

The balustrades were carefully integrated with the decking perimeter so that posts, borders and board junctions work together rather than appearing as separate elements. This attention to detailing is particularly important on raised decking, where both the decking surface and its surrounding handrails remain highly visible.
