This bespoke Millboard decking and garden transformation in Forest Hill, SE23, South East London completely reinvented an ageing and fragmented outdoor space. Designed and constructed by Decking Gurus, the project centred around a new Millboard Enhanced Grain Golden Oak decking terrace, complemented by bespoke Millboard-clad planters, architectural rendered walls, integrated steps and horizontal privacy screening. The original garden contained ageing timber decking, deteriorating raised planters, overgrown planting and several different levels that limited both the appearance and usability of the space. Our objective was not simply to replace the old decking but to redesign the entire area as a coordinated outdoor environment, with the Millboard decking forming the main architectural feature and the planters, rendered walls and screening designed around it.

Complete Garden Transformation

Before construction of the new terrace could begin, the existing timber decking, old planters and deteriorating structures were carefully removed. This exposed the underlying area and provided the opportunity to completely reconsider the layout, levels and relationship between the property and garden.

The new design introduced a substantial raised terrace directly outside the house, creating a generous outdoor entertaining area with clearly defined connections to the lower garden. Integrated planters were incorporated into the structure rather than added afterwards, while wide steps provide a comfortable transition between the different levels.

By designing the decking, planting, walls and access together, the completed garden feels considerably more spacious and cohesive than the original arrangement.

Millboard Enhanced Grain Golden Oak Decking

The main terrace was finished using Millboard Enhanced Grain decking in Golden Oak, selected for its warm natural appearance and beautifully detailed timber grain.

Golden Oak introduces rich honey and oak tones into the garden, creating an attractive contrast against the crisp white rendered walls while complementing the property's original London brickwork, timber screening and surrounding greenery. Its authentic hand-moulded surface provides the character of natural timber while delivering the low-maintenance performance expected from premium Millboard decking.

Unlike conventional timber decking, Millboard does not require regular sanding, staining or oiling to maintain its appearance. Particular attention was given to corners, transitions and areas where the decking meets the planters and staircase. These details are especially important on a bespoke installation because even small inconsistencies can become noticeable across a large continuous decking surface.

Bespoke Integrated Millboard Planters

The warm natural tones of the screening complement the Golden Oak decking and surrounding planting, helping visually connect the upper boundaries of the garden with the terrace below.

Wide Integrated Millboard Steps

The transition between the raised terrace and lower garden was resolved using generous Millboard-clad feature steps.

Rather than treating the staircase as a purely functional addition, its proportions were carefully considered as part of the overall terrace design. The wide steps create an inviting transition into the garden while reinforcing the horizontal architectural lines established by the decking and integrated planters.

Matching Golden Oak boards continue across the step surfaces and surrounding vertical detailing, allowing the staircase to appear as a natural continuation of the main Millboard terrace.

The generous width also improves movement between the different garden levels, helping the raised decking and lower lawn function as one connected outdoor environment.

Heavy-Duty Structural Construction

The long-term performance of any premium decking installation depends heavily on the structure hidden beneath the finished boards.

Following removal of the original decking, a new heavy-duty treated timber subframe was constructed to establish the required levels and provide structural support for the Millboard terrace, integrated planters and feature steps.

Additional framing and structural bracing were incorporated around the planters, perimeter edges and staircase, where the bespoke geometry required greater support than a straightforward rectangular decking installation.
