This bespoke Millboard Ebony Grey decking installation in Richmond, London transformed a heavily weathered timber terrace into a contemporary outdoor living space designed around the existing home, garden and mature landscaping. Completed by Decking Gurus, the project involved the complete removal of the deteriorated timber decking and construction of a new galvanised steel subframe, finished with premium Millboard Enhanced Grain decking in Ebony Grey. A bespoke Millboard-clad planter was carefully constructed around the existing mature tree, while wide integrated steps create a natural transition from the raised terrace into the lawn. The result is a sophisticated, highly durable and low-maintenance outdoor environment designed for dining, entertaining and everyday family life.

Replacing the Ageing Timber Decking

The original garden featured an extensive raised timber deck directly outside the rear of the property. After years of exposure to the elements, the timber boards had become heavily weathered and discoloured, while the existing structure no longer provided the quality or long-term performance required for the space.

The old decking and supporting structure were completely dismantled and removed, exposing the ground beneath and allowing the new terrace to be constructed from the foundations upwards. Rather than simply replacing the surface boards, the project provided an opportunity to completely reconsider the structural construction, levels, access to the garden and detailing around the existing mature tree.

This preparation was essential in creating a terrace capable of supporting the new Millboard installation while providing accurate levels and a strong foundation for the bespoke steps, perimeter details and integrated planter.

Galvanised Steel Decking Subframe

A major upgrade to the original installation was the construction of a new galvanised steel decking subframe.

The steel framework was carefully designed and fabricated to create a rigid, accurately levelled structural base beneath the Millboard decking. The extensive framework supports the main terrace as well as the changes in level and bespoke detailing required around the garden.

Using galvanised steel significantly reduces the amount of structural timber beneath the decking and provides a highly durable foundation suited to premium, long-term decking installations. Careful joist positioning also ensures that board edges, picture-frame borders, steps and fascia details receive appropriate structural support.

The completed framework forms the hidden foundation of the project and demonstrates why the quality of a premium decking installation depends just as much on what sits beneath the boards as on the finished surface.

Premium Millboard Enhanced Grain Ebony Grey

The terrace was finished using Millboard Enhanced Grain in Ebony Grey, creating a sophisticated contemporary appearance that works particularly well with the property's dark-framed glazed doors and existing brick architecture.

Ebony Grey combines deep grey and charcoal tones with Millboard's highly detailed moulded wood-grain surface, providing the character and texture associated with natural timber while creating a much more contemporary architectural finish.

The darker decking provides a striking contrast against the green lawn and established planting, helping the terrace stand out as a clearly defined outdoor living area without competing with the natural character of the garden.

Unlike conventional timber decking, Millboard does not require regular sanding, staining or oiling, making it particularly well suited to a substantial residential terrace designed for frequent family use and entertaining.

Large Outdoor Dining & Entertaining Terrace

The new decking creates a generous raised outdoor entertaining area directly outside the rear doors, strengthening the connection between the interior of the property and the garden.

The wide uninterrupted surface provides ample room for a dining table, chairs and additional outdoor furniture while maintaining comfortable circulation around the terrace. Positioning the main decking level close to the internal floor creates a much stronger indoor-outdoor relationship and allows the garden to function as a natural extension of the home.

A straight board layout visually extends the terrace across the width of the property, while carefully positioned picture-frame borders define the perimeter and create a clean architectural finish.

The result is a practical outdoor living area capable of accommodating everything from everyday family meals to larger gatherings and summer entertaining.

Bespoke Millboard Tree Planter

One of the defining features of this Richmond decking project is the bespoke raised planter constructed around the existing mature tree.

Rather than removing an established feature of the garden, the new terrace was specifically designed around it. A dedicated structural framework was constructed to form the planter before the exterior was carefully clad using Millboard, allowing the feature to visually integrate with the surrounding decking.

The planter incorporates crisp corner detailing and coordinated Millboard finishes, creating the appearance of a purpose-built architectural feature rather than a separate addition to the terrace.

Retaining the mature tree preserves an important part of the established garden and introduces natural height, texture and greenery immediately alongside the contemporary decking. Additional planting around its base further softens the transition between the hard landscaping and the surrounding garden.

Wide Integrated Steps & Garden Connection

The change in level between the raised decking and lawn was carefully incorporated into the overall design through a set of wide integrated Millboard steps.

Rather than introducing a narrow staircase, the broader steps create an architectural transition between the two levels and visually open the terrace towards the garden. Their position naturally directs movement between the house, decking and lawn while maintaining the clean geometry of the overall installation.

The steps are finished in the same Ebony Grey Millboard as the main terrace, allowing them to become an integral part of the design. Picture-frame detailing and coordinated fascia boards provide crisp edges and a consistent finish across each level.

This approach makes the terrace feel connected to the wider garden rather than appearing as an isolated raised platform.

Precision Picture-Frame Borders & Millboard Fascias

Particular attention was given to the perimeter detailing throughout the installation.

The main decking boards were installed in a clean linear configuration and surrounded by carefully positioned picture-frame borders, providing a defined architectural edge and eliminating exposed board ends around the terrace.

Vertical areas were finished with complementary Millboard fascia detailing, concealing the supporting structure and creating a fully finished appearance when the terrace is viewed from the lawn.

The same attention to detail continues around the steps and bespoke planter, allowing the various components of the project to read as one coordinated design.

Concealed Millboard Durafix fixings help maintain the uninterrupted appearance of the decking surface, ensuring that the realistic timber grain remains the dominant visual feature.

Designed Around the Existing Garden

An important part of this project was preserving the established character of the garden while introducing a substantially more contemporary terrace.

The existing mature tree was retained and incorporated into the bespoke planter, while surrounding shrubs, climbing plants and garden borders continue to provide greenery around the new decking. Against this planting, the darker Ebony Grey surface creates a particularly effective contrast.

The relationship between the contemporary Millboard decking, traditional brick property and mature garden demonstrates how modern materials can be introduced without removing the character that has developed within an established outdoor space.

Instead of dominating the garden, the terrace provides a strong architectural foundation around which the existing landscape can continue to mature.

Built for Long-Term Outdoor Performance

The transformation was designed not only to improve the appearance of the garden but also to significantly reduce the maintenance associated with the previous timber terrace.

Millboard's wood-free construction removes many of the problems traditionally associated with external timber decking, including splintering and the requirement for repeated staining, painting or oiling. Combined with the galvanised steel structural framework, the system provides a robust solution designed around long-term outdoor performance.

This combination is particularly valuable for larger residential decking installations where accessing or replacing structural components beneath the finished boards at a later stage can be disruptive and expensive.

By investing in both the visible Millboard surface and the structure beneath it, the project provides a premium outdoor environment designed to remain functional and attractive for many years.
