Replacing the Deteriorating Timber Deck
The original raised timber decking had reached the end of its practical service life after years of exposure to the British climate. Weathering, moisture, algae and deterioration of the timber structure had affected both its appearance and stability.
Restricted ventilation beneath the existing decking had also contributed to conditions that encouraged timber deterioration. Rather than carrying out short-term repairs to an ageing structure, the decision was made to completely remove the existing installation and construct a new terrace designed around durability, structural stability and minimal ongoing maintenance.
This provided the opportunity not simply to replace the boards, but to redesign and improve the entire raised outdoor living area.
Groundworks & Deep Concrete Foundations
Once the original decking had been dismantled and removed, extensive preparation and groundworks were completed before fabrication of the new structure.
Deep concrete foundations were installed at the required structural locations to create a secure base for the new galvanised steel framework. Careful setting-out at this stage was essential because the foundations determine the positioning, levels and structural geometry of the entire terrace above.
This approach allowed the new structure to be designed independently from the failed timber installation it replaced, creating a robust foundation for the substantial raised deck.
Precision-Engineered Galvanised Steel Substructure
One of the most important features of this project is hidden beneath the finished Millboard surface.
The complete terrace is supported by a bespoke galvanised steel decking subframe, individually fabricated for the dimensions, levels and geometry of the garden. Unlike conventional timber framing, galvanised steel provides excellent dimensional stability and resistance to moisture-related deterioration while creating an exceptionally rigid foundation for a raised terrace.
Additional structural bracing was incorporated throughout the framework to increase rigidity and maintain accurate geometry across the installation.
Precision surveying and laser levelling were used during construction to establish the finished levels before the Millboard boards were installed, helping create the accurately aligned surface visible in the completed terrace.
Bespoke Angled Steel Framework
Rather than constructing a conventional rectangular deck, the steel structure was carefully designed around the shape of the available garden.
The bespoke angled front section follows the natural boundaries of the outdoor space, maximising the usable terrace area while creating a more considered architectural relationship with the surrounding garden.
Achieving this accurately required careful fabrication of the steel framework, structural bracing and precise setting-out before installation of the decking boards.
The result is a terrace that feels specifically designed for the property rather than imposed upon it.
Millboard Enhanced Grain Golden Oak
The finished terrace has been constructed using Millboard Enhanced Grain composite decking in Golden Oak, selected for its warm oak character and suitability for contemporary residential gardens.
Golden Oak introduces natural warmth against the property's white rendered extension and dark contemporary glazing while complementing the existing timber fencing and surrounding greenery.
Millboard's surface is moulded from selected natural oak to reproduce the texture and character of real timber. Unlike conventional timber decking, however, it does not require routine sanding, staining or oiling, making it particularly well suited to homeowners looking for the appearance of timber with substantially reduced maintenance requirements.
Concealed Fixings & Architectural Detailing
Every decking board was carefully positioned to maintain consistent spacing and clean lines throughout the terrace.
Millboard's concealed fixing system minimises visible fixings across the finished surface, while bespoke picture-frame borders and carefully detailed fascia boards define the perimeter of the raised structure.
Particular attention was given to junctions, corners and transitions between the terrace and the property. These seemingly small details have a significant impact on the finished appearance and help distinguish a professionally designed Millboard installation from a basic decking replacement.
Wide Architectural Feature Steps
The level difference between the raised terrace and garden was incorporated into the design through a series of wide contemporary feature steps.
Rather than treating the staircase simply as a means of access, its generous proportions make it an important architectural element of the terrace. The steps provide a comfortable transition into the garden while visually extending the decking into the surrounding landscape.
Carefully finished fascia detailing and clean geometric lines continue the same design language used across the main terrace.
Integrated Warm-White LED Lighting
Discreet warm-white LED lighting was integrated into the feature steps to improve visibility after dark while adding another dimension to the finished design.
During the evening, the lighting highlights the geometry of the staircase and creates a warm, welcoming atmosphere around the terrace without overwhelming the garden.
The combination of Golden Oak decking and subtle architectural lighting transforms the area from a practical daytime terrace into an inviting evening entertaining space.
Seamless Indoor-Outdoor Living
The new decking was designed around the property's contemporary rear extension and expansive glazed doors, strengthening the relationship between the interior living space and garden.
The generous terrace immediately outside the house creates a natural location for outdoor dining furniture, seating, entertaining and family gatherings, effectively extending the usable living area beyond the building.
The warm Golden Oak surface also provides an attractive visual transition from the contemporary interior architecture into the softer landscaping beyond.
Designed for Low-Maintenance Outdoor Living
The choice of Millboard and a galvanised steel structural system was driven not only by appearance but by long-term performance.
Millboard eliminates the routine sanding, staining and oiling associated with conventional timber decking, while the galvanised steel framework avoids many of the moisture-related deterioration issues associated with external timber subframes.
Together, these materials create a raised decking system designed around structural stability, reduced maintenance and long-term outdoor performance.
For a substantial raised terrace such as this, investing in the structure beneath the boards is just as important as selecting the visible decking finish.
